Craigmiller Castle

Craigmiller Castle is an " L " shaped keep. The keep was constructed in the 14th century by the Preston's . The curtain wall and towers surrounding it , were constructed in the 15th century . Later in the 16th century the courtyard enclosure and ditch were added .You enter through an arched entryway into the lobby and a spiral staircase .The basement and many chambers are vaulted .There are four stories to the courtyard ranges .The Earl of Mar in 1477 was imprisoned here in a cellar where his was left to die . In 1566 Mary Queen of Scots took refuge here often . She was close enough to ride horseback from her residence at Holyrood Palace . The chamber where Mary is said to have slept while visiting here has a beautifully shaped fireplace . In 1660 the castle was purchased by Sir John Gilmour . He updated the structure to be his main residence . There is chapel located in the East Garden that was built in or around 1520 . Outside the walls of the West Garden , a fish pond was constructed in the form of a " P " for the Preston family name . A skeleton was located in the vaults inside a wall in 1813 . I have not read of any known hauntings . The castle is under the protection and preservation of Historic Scotland .
