Edinburgh Underground Vaults

It was October 31st 2002 . I wanted to spend the Samhain ( Halloween ) in the Underground Vaults of Edinburgh . Mark had been in contact with Fran the director of Mercat Tours . Mercat has guided tours that take you through the most interesting historical and haunted sites in Edinburgh .The vaults and Mary's King Close are among these tours . Since it was such a busy night for the tour company, Fran the director of Mercat graciously offered to take me the next morning on a personally guided tour . I was taking a train early the next day to London so it just wouldn't have worked out with my travel schedule . Mark called the owner of the vaults Norrie Rowan a close friend of his fathers and a well known retired rugby player . He offered to take us through the vaults before the crowds gathered for the night time Halloween tours . The underground vaults are magnificent to see and to marvel at the idea of an area of Edinburgh not changed since the 1600's . Archeological evidence found during Rowan's excavation are kept glass encased for the public to view what it was like to live in those times of plague and pestilence . Norrie also took us through parts of the vaults not open to the public for an extra treat . Of course the vaults and Mary's King Close are reputedly haunted by many different entities . You can read the definitive book on the world beneath Edinburgh in a book entitled " Hidden and Haunted Underground Edinburgh " . According to Norrie the most knowledgeable person on this history is Fran herself who runs Mercat Tours .You can bet when I go back I will take her up on her offer of a personally guided tour .
