Nothin but hardcore ghost huntin'

Craignethan Castle 2nd Visit

Craignethan Castle was built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart . He was beheaded for treason in 1540 . Mary Queen of Scots spent the night before the Battle of Langside in 1568 at Craignethan . Most of her army was made up of Hamiltons .They were defeated by the Regent of Moray and she fled to England . The ghosts that have been witnessed at Craignethan include a headless ghost identified by witnesses as the spirit of Mary, a woman's voice has been heard in the courtyard . Mysterious pipe music and an apparition of a woman in Stuart period dress . I returned to Scotland to see castle ruins and spend 10 days with my friend Mark . On my last visit we ventured to Craignethan at dusk and when we were leaving it was pitch dark . This time they wanted me to see it in the daylight hours so we could enter the great hall and other parts we weren't allowed to enter after closing . We were greeted by the caretaker named Olivia who was a gracious host indeed . You can read additional history on this castle on the original Craignethan page . Below are pictures of the Great Hall , the spiral stairs leading to the upper chambers with ecto , the latrine and the Minstrel's Gallery . I have to pay tribute to the incredible job " Historic Scotland "has acheived in the caring of their countries treasures . Click the pictures below to see larger the version .
